Why a Starcraft Pontoon Boat is Better Than a Sun Tracker Party Barge Pontoon Boat

To be completely fair, we are comparing the Starcraft EX model which is on an even level to the Sun Tracker Deluxe model.
When it comes to pontoon boats, both Starcraft and Sun Tracker offer impressive models, but Starcraft often emerges as the clear winner for those who want long lasting quality, durability, and performance. Here’s why:
1. Superior Build Quality
Starcraft pontoons are known for their strong, aluminum construction, providing an exceptionally durable and stable platform on both freshwater and saltwater. Their designs focus on creating long-lasting boats that stand the test of time. Tracker’s Party Barge, while offering solid options, tends to focus more on budget-friendly designs that may not match the same level of durability or versatility.
Craftmanship You Can Count On.
Don’t take our word for it, simply take a closer look at our fleet of expertly crafted pontoons. Decades of building exceptional boats have taught us that true quality comes from meticulous construction and attention to detail. Compare our hat-channel and cross channel construction with the foundations of other pontoons. Count the fasteners. Note the heft of the aluminum gauge. What sets us apart is in the details. DOES YOUR BOAT HAVE OUR CONSTRUCTION? Other manufacturers use C-channel designs which can require more cross members and provide less strength than Starcraft’s hat-channel construction. And with imbalanced weight distribution, C-channel cross members are less able to withstand the forces exerted on the pontoon year after year.
CROSS CHANNEL CONSTRUCTION: Provides superior chassis strength. The transom area is supported with up to 3/16″ hat-channel construction using twice the number of fixtures as other pontoons. This provides the strength needed to handle the high torque of today’s large engines. notice the black seal on every cross member below. Most pontoon manufacturers skip this step to reduce cost.

CONSTRUCTED FOR ENDURANCE: 3/4″, 7-ply marine treated plywood through-bolted and screwed to the hat channels to create the strongest seams in the industry. (“Heavy” hat-channel shown).
FENCE & RAILING: Features foam backing to prevent rattling and fully welded and anodized railing to add strength. Anodized welds are never painted. It’s all backed by a 6-year warranty.
THROUGH-BOLTED TRANSOM: Made of up to .190″ gauge aluminum and supported with up to 20 stainless bolts to handle today’s higher horsepower engines. All saltwater series boats (which is all we sell) have stainless steel bolted construction.
4-POINT DECK TO HULL FUSION: Starcraft deck brackets have 4 points of fusion for an extended area of contact with the tube. In addition to providing increased strength and support, this reduces frame twist and racking in rough water and guards against tube fatigue. Sun Tracker does NOT have this.
HAT-CHANNEL CONSTRUCTION: It all begins with strength points of .250” (heavy) and .125” (standard) gauge extruded aluminum hat-channels that are 6″ wide and secured with 8 bolts spanning our 6″ wide deck risers. This creates the widest base in the industry and gives our pontoons greater stability without adding unnecessary weight. Combine that with a .190″ gauge aluminum transom that’s through-bolted with up to 20 bolts and footed deck risers that prevent tube fatigue, and you see why Starcraft backs its industry-leading construction with a Limited Lifetime Warranty on every product. (“Heavy” hat-channel shown.)
Examples of Starcraft’s Superior Build Quality vs. Sun Tracker
- Bracketing between the pontoon and deck of the Sun Tracker boat in inferior. Starcraft uses an “M” shape which spreads the stress from the pontton going through the water over more area making it stronger. “M” braces touch the bontoon in 4 places not 2 like the Tracker pontoon boat.
- Side wall construction on a Tracker pontoon has much less verticle supports that the Starcraft. This makes the wall and everything attached to it weaker. Tubing size is 20% less on the Sun Tracker pontoon.
- The deck of a Starcraft pontoon boat is stainless steel through bolted to the aluminum cross members. The Tracker uses steel self tapping screws which weaken and corrode over time. The cross members are heavier gauge aluminum and placed closer together on the Starcraft than on the Sun Tracker.
- Upholstrey quality is far better on the Starcraft. Starcraft uses much heavier and sun damage resistant materials. The Starcraft uses all stainless steel fasteners in the making of all upholstrey. Sun Tracker uses steel staples which rust quickly when used or stored near salt water.
- Full length protector skegs on all Starcraft pontoon boats. They run from the front tip to the very back of the pontoon. Sun Tracker does not have any pontoon protection on 95% of the pontoon.

- Flooring Issues: Common problems with Sun Tracker vinyl decks include: rapid wear and tear due to the vinyl’s lower quality, excessive heat build-up in hot weather, slipperiness when wet, potential for cracking or tearing at seams, and difficulty cleaning stubborn stains; many users report that the vinyl on Sun Tracker boats is not as durable as higher-end brands, often requiring more frequent maintenance or replacement, especially if used heavily. - Key points about Sun Tracker vinyl decks: [1, 2, 4]
- Material quality: Critics often mention that the vinyl used on Sun Tracker boats is considered “cheap” and may not be as resistant to wear and tear compared to other brands. [1, 2, 4]
- Heat absorption: Vinyl can become very hot in direct sunlight, making it uncomfortable to walk on during summer months. [1, 6]
- Slippery surface: When wet, the vinyl can become slippery, posing a safety concern. [1, 7]
- Seam issues: Over time, seams on the vinyl can start to crack or separate, leading to water ingress. [8, 9]
- Cleaning challenges: Certain stains may be difficult to remove from the vinyl. [1, 6, 7]

2. Innovative Design
Starcraft’s pontoons feature cutting-edge design elements like extra-wide beams and thicker, more robust pontoon tubes, providing enhanced stability and a smoother ride. Whether you’re cruising through calm waters or taking on choppier saltwater, Starcraft ensures comfort and security. Tracker’s Party Barge, though functional, often leans toward simpler layouts without the same attention to advanced design and detail that Starcraft integrates into their models.
3. Saltwater Warranty
For those who venture into the saltwater, a crucial factor is the warranty and the boat’s ability to resist corrosion. Starcraft’s commitment to quality extends to a saltwater-friendly warranty, giving owners confidence that their investment is protected in marine environments. Tracker, while offering warranties, typically does not cover saltwater resistance in the same way, which can be a significant drawback for those who love coastal adventures.
Starcraft pontoons tend to have an edge in saltwater performance compared to Sun Tracker pontoons. Starcraft boats are built with saltwater-grade materials and have corrosion-resistant features that make them more durable in harsh saltwater conditions. Their warranty, including saltwater use, also provides added peace of mind. Sun Tracker pontoons are typically better suited for freshwater, and using them in saltwater can reduce their longevity if not properly maintained. Always refer to each brand’s specific saltwater warranty terms and maintenance requirements for the best care.
4. More Engine Choices
Starcraft offers a wider range of engine options and brands to choose from, allowing you to customize your boat to meet your specific needs. Whether you need more power for speed or a quieter engine for serene cruising, Starcraft delivers flexibility. Tracker boats, on the other hand, only come with Mercury engines, which might not suit every boater’s preference.
5. More Financing Options
Sun Tracker is financed through a single source where Starcraft boats can be financed through many sources creating an opportunity to save money on loan costs and fees. To get started with a great loan through Top Notch Marine click here.
6. Comfort and Features
Starcraft’s pontoons are designed with high-quality furniture, ample storage space, and comfortable seating arrangements, making them ideal for long days on the water. Tracker’s Party Barge may be perfect for parties and casual gatherings, but when it comes to long-term comfort and luxury, Starcraft tends to outshine its competition with added features like premium upholstery, larger more adjustable seating, and additional amenities like cushioned flooring and higher safety rails.
7. Dimensions Comparison

Conclusion: Starcraft for the Win
While both Starcraft and Sun Tracker offer great pontoon boats, Starcraft shines when it comes to durability, versatility, and performance, especially in salt water. Whether you’re fishing, planning family get-togethers or solo adventures, Starcraft boats stand out with their ability to handle various conditions. Add in the peace of mind provided by their saltwater warranty, and it’s clear why Starcraft is a smarter choice for serious boating enthusiasts who want a pontoon boat to last.
