A modern four-stroke may have very different weight, mounting, steering, electrical and fuel requirements than the engine it replaces. Changing from one engine to two—or changing the number of engines in any direction—requires more than calculating equivalent horsepower. The hull must be approved for that configuration, and the transom, engine spacing, rigging path, steering travel and weight distribution all must support it.
